New E-MTB tires from Kenda, MAXXIS and Schwalbe
Schwalbe
Launching a new version of the classic Nobby Nic, Schwalbe’s latest offering sees them counteract the higher wear and tear of E-MTB tires by relying on a somewhat harder Dual Compound rubber – duly keeping to a decent price of around € 40. Thanks to the use of the Double Defense carcass, the tire is reputed to offer significantly higher puncture resistance. Their price-point all-rounder tire, the Smart Sam, has also been adapted for use on E-MTBs, and there’s an additional plus-size version that also promises increased puncture protection.
While not officially E-MTB specific, Schwalbe have also donated a new carcass to their plus-size tires. Dubbed the SnakeSkin Apex, there’s an additional layer in the sidewalls that is reputed to vastly reduce the risk of damage and allow the tires to be ridden with lower air pressure (and therefore more stability). If you’re still cautious about the risk of puncturing, you can also go for the PROCORE system at a later date.
