Issue #014 Review

The best eMTB disc brake you can buy

MAGURA MT Trail Sport

On paper, the Magura MT Trail Sports make sense: a powerful MT5 4-piston caliper on the front, and a smaller, MT4 2-piston caliper on the back, where the power requirements are less. Using the ergonomic aluminium HC lever, the MT Trail Sports offer all the benefits of the super bling Trail Carbon, but at a fraction of the price. Adaptors can be purchased for SRAM or Shimano shifters: to ensure your bars don’t get cluttered and the bridged front caliper and rear use Magura’s innovative magnetic pad loading, which means you spend less time fiddling during pad changes. On the trail there was a lot to like. The new HC lever falls much easier to hand than the older, and bulkier, two-fingered lever and ergonomics are high. You can certainly sense a difference front and back between the brake power delivery and modulation: the front is fierce and powerful, while the back offers more modulation to avoid skidding, but does feel underpowered. This takes a little while to get used to, and polarised testers, especially those who liked a more balanced set-up between front and rear. We were testing with the Performance Organic pads and were very impressed with the bite and fade resistance on long descents, but we did encounter some annoying howling in the wet or if they had not been used in a while.

The Magura MT Trail Sport are intelligently designed brakes, however on the trail we would prefer the increased power offered by the 4-piston caliper on both the front and the rear.
