Massa Marittima – Taking the little ones on an E-bike tour
Massa Marittima is a medieval town in Southern Tuscany, not unknown in the bike scene. The Mediterranean climate makes it possible to bike and exercise all year long – it’s not for nothing that pro riders like Thomas Frischknecht or Nino Schurter have a secondary residence in Massa Marittima. Massa Vecchia and Tenuta il Cicalino offer a wide range of organized tours. Both bike hotels offer E-bike rentals.
As a sporty family with two kids, we found a perfect solution for us: an E-bike with a kids’ bike trailer! We love to go mountain biking and we do so as often as possible. As most parents would know, it is not always easy to reconcile sports with family. Of course it is always the aim to share the most beautiful moments with your family; if the kids are too young to go biking, simply put them in a bike trailer and off you go on your E-bikes. Tuscany is the perfect place for this kind of tour. There are uphills and downhills with selective ground conditions. You wouldn’t get very far on a conventional mountain bike plus trailer because you would quickly run out of breath. That’s why we went for the Flyer Pedelec from the X-line, 29-inch wheels. And we are starting directly from Albergo Massa Vecchia.
We are going uphill in high-mode, after all we have quite a bit of weight to tug – two kids plus the trailer amount to approximately 50kg. We are receiving active support from our bike without neglecting the sporting effect. We are starting to sweat while the kids are having a nap with relish. We were pretty surprised by the E-MTB’s battery life. Due to our high weight and the previously selected up- and downhills, we brought along an extra battery, just to be on the safe side. Changing the battery wasn’t necessary though. We traveled about 25km and still had battery reserves.
Massa Marittima has a lot to offer. We are definitely coming back soon to travel some more kilometers. But before that, we’ll be going to the French Alps to put the battery life to the acid test.
Travelling to Massa Marittima is possible by plane, train or by car. We recommend travelling by car, as the town is in a quite remote location and a car guarantees you onsite mobility, also to get to the beaches. It takes about an 8 hour-drive from Munich to Massa Marittima. The ones who still prefer to travel by plane should aim for Pisa Airport.
