The Best E-SUV 2025 – 10 E-Bikes in Comparison Test

The name Specialized stands for performance, prestige and California bike culture. The only way the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 could seem more alluring would be if it came in an S-Works version – or was studded with diamonds. In our first ride test for DOWNTOWN, the Specialized team already proved they know how to build a proper SUV e bike.
Specialized approach the e bike as a fully integrated system: motor and bike are meant to work as one. Their drive system is co-developed in Cham, Switzerland, and it’s specifically tuned to match the bike’s geometry and intended use. If you walk into a typical bike shop asking for an SUV e bike, you’ll often be shown a heavily kitted-out trekking bike – limited suspension travel, minimal tire clearance, tacked-on fenders, and half-baked integration. Specialized take a different approach with the Tero X: the goal is to combine upright comfort, confident handling under load, and genuine off-road capability – not just for gravel paths, but beyond.
By now, the Turbo Tero X 6.0 is no spring chicken. So the question is: can Specialized’s aging SUV concept with its mullet wheel setup (29” front, 27.5” rear) still compete at the top level in 2025?
The Turbo Tero X 6.0 is available in three versions, each with different motor power and battery capacity:
- 50 Nm + 530 Wh (Specialized Turbo Tero X 4.0)
- 70 Nm + 710 Wh (Specialized Turbo Tero X 5.0)
- 90 Nm + 710 Wh in the top model (Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0)
We tested the most powerful version: 90 Nm of torque, 710 Wh battery, and a price tag of € 6,200. It topped our SUV e bike group test last time around. But does the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 still lead the pack, or has the competition caught up?
What Sets the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 SUV E Bike Apart? Performance Parts!
In addition to its striking looks, what really sets the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 SUV e bike apart is the seamless integration of the motor and components.
At its core is the Specialized 2.2 motor with 90 Nm of torque – originally developed for the Turbo Levo Gen3 to deliver powerful eMTB-level performance. Paired with a 710 Wh battery and Specialized’s in-house software, the drive system clearly comes from the mountain bike world. The battery is fully integrated into the down tube, where it’s secured with a lock, and pops out easily with a simple downward motion. The charging port is placed right next to the battery lock, which also houses the release lever for easy access.

Specialized equips the Tero X 6.0 with rugged, trail-proven performance components. The SRAM CODE RSC brakes offer powerful, finely tunable stopping power, while the 130/120 mm RockShox suspension setup is among the best in the test. Gear changes come via the precise 12-speed SRAM X01 Eagle drivetrain, which performs smoothly even under load.
The centrally mounted MasterMind TCD display on the stem is sleek, high-contrast, easy to read, and even features a USB-C port for charging your smartphone. But that’s where the tidiness ends – the front end is strewn with cables, to the point where the Lezyne front light can cast spiderweb-like shadows onto the road ahead.

The Specialized app adds a robust connectivity package, including:
- Smart Control, which automatically adjusts motor output based on your available range and remaining ride distance (you’ll need to input the estimated distance, etc.)
- System Lock, which enables PIN-based motor locking and a motion-triggered alarm.
- Extensive motor tuning options, allowing you to customize each support mode (Eco, Trail, and Turbo) to tune the max power, responsiveness, and ride feel.
What’s still missing in 2025 is onboard navigation – the app only tells you where you’ve already been, not where you’re supposed to be going. Then again, Specialized isn’t alone here: several other test bikes also lack built-in navigation features.
Planning longer rides? No problem. The Turbo Tero X 6.0 comes with two additional mounting points inside the main triangle. One sits under the top tube and fits a large water bottle, while the other, just above the motor, is best suited for a tool mount.
Tuning tip: Use the Specialized Coolcave bike basket with Specialized/Fjällräven Cave Lid Pack for a secure fit and plenty of heel clearance.
Everyday Equipment – Cleanly Integrated?
The fender integration on the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 is about as good as it gets: the long, wrap-around mudguards keep dirt and spray off your legs, while contributing to the bike’s clean, cohesive look. The rear rack also enhances the bike’s sporty appearance. Its low-mounted rails help lower the center of gravity, ensuring stable handling when riding with a full load. Specialized don’t use the ORTLIEB QL3.1 system found on bikes like the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ. Instead, they rely on their own solution: baskets and bags co-developed with Fjällräven. They mount securely, and still offer plenty of heel clearance – a smart, practical design choice.

The rear rack supports up to 20 kg. If you need to carry more, Specialized offer an optional front rack for an additional 10 kg of load – it mounts directly to the head tube and costs around € 150; a practical upgrade for anyone who wants extra storage or a bit of cargo bike flair. The total permitted load is 135 kg, and the trailer approval extends to 60 kg – ideal for your next adventure with a four-legged friend. (Check out our dog trailer comparison over at our sister magazine DOWNTOWN!)
Visibility matters – especially in everyday riding. The front light is activated via a dedicated handlebar button and features a powerful high-beam mode that illuminates a wide area. The rear light with integrated brake light is mounted quite low and feels a bit underwhelming compared to the best lighting systems in the test field.

At just 26.5 kg, the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 is the lightest bike in the test field – closely followed by the Mondraker Chaser X. That makes a noticeable difference, both on the trail and in day-to-day life. If you ever need to carry the bike up a flight of stairs in the city, the Specialized remains manageable. With heavier models like the Riese & Müller Delite5 GT or the Kalkhoff Entice 7+ Excite ABS Wave, it’s a far more demanding task.

What is the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 Capable Of – Does It Still Have Winning Potential?
Angle-adjustable stem or low step-through frame? Not here. The Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 focuses fully on performance. Once you’re on the bike, you’re placed in a forward, sporty riding position – not overly aggressive, but more upright than on the Moustache CLUTCH. For riders planning to use the Turbo Tero X 6.0 mainly for long, relaxed tours, the riding position might feel a bit too sporty.
Whether it’s for touring, daily commutes, or trail use, the X-Fusion Manic dropper post with a massive 190 mm of travel makes mounting and dismounting at traffic lights or crossings easier. On the trail, it also provides excellent freedom of movement when things get steep, allowing you to move your weight backwards for more stability. The smaller 27.5″ rear wheel creates some extra clearance before your backside hits the mudguard. It also improves the bike’s confident handling and agility. The Tero X responds instantly to steering input and handles precisely, whether navigating through city traffic or tight trail sections.
Together with the Haibike ADVENTR and the Mondraker Chaser X, the Tero X is among the SUV e bikes in the test field that really shine off-road. The suspension – 130 mm up front and 120 mm in the rear – handles roots, small rock gardens and steps with ease, staying composed without bottoming out or losing control. Whether you’re riding over city curbs or roots on forest trails, the Tero X remains stable even at higher speeds. At the same time, the suspension delivers enough feedback to keep more ambitious riders entertained. When it comes to riding fun, the Tero X shares the top spot with the Haibike ADVENTR 11 ABS.
While the SRAM CODE RSC brakes may not be the latest generation, they’re still one of the most powerful and finely tunable four-piston brakes in the test. They’re a reliable choice for experienced riders who value strong braking performance, though beginners may find the one-finger levers a bit intimidating. In our view, ABS would have been a smart addition here – a missed opportunity.
In day-to-day use, the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 feels stable and forgiving. However, the rear rack comes with a trade-off: larger panniers like those from ORTLIEB with the QL2.1 system sit relatively far forward, which can interfere with riders who have large feet.
The combination of the Specialized 2.2 motor and SRAM X01 Eagle 12-speed drivetrain delivers a wide gear range and plenty of power. No climb is too steep for the Tero X. At the same time, the motor responds smoothly, making it approachable even for beginners. And when needed, the full power can be applied precisely – a real plus for sporty riders.

Who is the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 For?
If you’ve already got some trail experience and are secretly looking for a nimble eMTB with everyday features, rather than a pure SUV e bike, this setup is spot on: plenty of power, responsive suspension, and well-balanced handling. At the same time, the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 remains practical and easy to operate in daily use. It’s especially well-suited to riders who know how to tap into its dynamic ride character: that’s when the Tero X really comes alive. A bike that’s more capable than it looks, and one that puts riding fun front and center.
Conclusion – Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0
The Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 is a blast to ride, on both road and trail. It scores with riding fun, sporty geometry, and confident handling, especially off-road. Weight, integration, and spec are solid across the board. However, the lack of ABS, limited heel clearance with large panniers, and a somewhat cluttered cockpit ultimately cost Specialized the top spot. That said, the Tero X is still up there with the best SUV e bikes.
Tops
- Tons of off-road riding fun
- Wide range of use cases
- High-quality, powerful MTB-grade components
Flops
- Riding position too sporty for relaxed riders
- No ABS
- Heel strikes with large pannier bags on the rear rack
- Cluttered cockpit
