Pinion’s MGU, belt drive, 150 mm of travel, and a full complement of everyday equipment – the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ offers it all: eMTB performance and urban practicality. But is that enough to build the best SUV e bike? We put it to the test to find out whether the concept performs as well in real life as it does on paper.

French brand Moustache only builds e bikes – from the e-gravel Dimanche to the powerful Game eMTB. In April, a new aluminium model joined the lineup: the Moustache Clutch eMTB. For the first time, Moustache turned to a motor supplier other than Bosch, equipping the bike with a Pinion MGU gearbox motor and a belt drive.

We’ve already tested the performance version in a standalone review – you can find it here! For our SUV e bike group test, however, it’s the EQ variant stepping into the ring. Compared to the top-spec model, it dials back the suspension travel slightly and adds practical features like a kickstand and luggage rack – full everyday equipment included. According to the manufacturer, this is the perfect all-rounder: ready for daily use, evening rides, and even transalpine adventures. We skipped the Alps due to time constraints, but the 29.22 kg bike had to earn its stripes in every other way.
At € 8,299, the Moustache doesn’t come cheap – it’s the second most expensive e-SUV in our test field, behind only the Riese & Müller Delite5 GT Pinion. So, does it deliver on its promise, and is the high price justified? We found out.

What Sets the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ Apart?

With the Clutch 150.7 EQ, Moustache presents an all-new development – and it shows at first glance. With no visible derailleur or cassette, the rear end looks slim and unusually clean. The real highlight, however, sits around the massive bottom bracket area: the Pinion MGU (Motor.Gearbox.Unit), which combines the drivetrain and motor into a single housing.

The 780 Wh battery comes from the FIT system of ebike components, and is fully integrated into the down tube. To remove it, you first have to unlock the motor cover using a twist fastener, and then pull out a locking pin. However, the battery can only be removed by flipping the bike upside down or laying it on its side – not exactly ideal for an SUV e bike. After all, who wants to turn their dirty bike upside down after a wet commute, just to charge the battery indoors? That said, the required tool is cleverly stored inside the head tube – easy to access and rattle-free. Nicely done!

Complicated and cumbersome: with the Moustache Clutch, you’ll be happy to find a charging socket at your parking spot – otherwise, the five-minute removal quickly becomes a test of patience.

The central control unit is the Master Node colour display, elegantly integrated into the top tube. It features three buttons: power on top, mode switch on the right, and another on the left. Holding them down allows you to scroll through additional views. The system is complemented by a handlebar-mounted remote with its own button for walk assist.

For individual tuning of motor support and display settings, the FIT E-Bike Control app comes highly recommended. It allows you to configure ride modes, set range parameters, and view a wide range of system data.

Displays everything you need: battery level, remaining range, cadence, and the automatic shifting mode (which you can activate by holding down the front trigger). Once engaged, an ‘A+’ icon appears on the display.

In addition to fine-tuning the ride modes, the automatic shifting can also be customised – and there’s even a built-in navigation function.

Cruise the City or Conquer the Trails?

The everyday equipment of the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ blends seamlessly into the bike’s overall design. The sturdy aluminium mudguards are well integrated, and the rear light is embedded directly into the rear guard – though it sits a bit low, making it easy to miss in city traffic.

The only bike in the test compatible with the ORTLIEB QL3.1 system – and it’s rated for up to 20 kg of payload.

A standout feature: the luggage rack is compatible with the ORTLIEB QL3.1 system, and supports up to 20 kg of payload. It’s the only rack in the test field that allows you to use ORTLIEB’s clever quick-release system. For those who regularly ride with ORTLIEB panniers, that’s a real convenience boost – mounting the bags is much quicker, and it eliminates the usual fiddling with hooks and straps. One clear drawback of the Clutch: Moustache don’t offer official trailer approval, so your dog or child will have to stay at home. We’ll let you decide whether that’s a bad thing!

What Is the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ SUV E Bike Capable Of? More Than Just a Trail Rocket With a Rack?

Drop the post, take a seat, and off you go. Combined with the 780 mm wide handlebar, the result is a sporty yet still comfortable riding position, making longer tours feel relaxed and manageable. Compared to the Haibike ADVENTR 11 ABS and the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0, the handling feels a bit more sluggish, though that’s more due to the voluminous MAXXIS Rekon tires than the geometry itself. They roll a little slowly on asphalt, but deliver tons of grip and a planted, confident ride feel in return.

Uphill, the Pinion MGU pushes like a mini shuttle drive. The Auto-Shift function takes care of all of the shifting decisions – both on- and off-road – so you can fully focus on riding. On more technical surfaces or steeper climbs, you’ll appreciate being able to shift manually. And it’s actually fun: with the MGU, you can shift gears while standing still – it’s ideal for traffic lights and crossings, and offers a clear advantage over traditional derailleur systems. On top of that, the low-maintenance belt drive is designed to last around 30,000 km, and the MGU only needs an oil change every 10,000 km – making this bike a great option for year-round riders.

The Clutch also feels right at home off the beaten track. When you get out of the saddle on the trail, you feel like you’re integrated into the bike, rather than wobbling around precariously on top. The 150 mm RockShox fork and Moustache shock handle impacts with confidence, and the chunky tires soak up roots and edges with ease. The result? A big grin on your face. Braking is handled by the MAGURA MT5 four-piston brakes, which offer good modulation with their one-finger levers. However, they can take some getting used to for beginners – and the absence of ABS is a missed opportunity, especially considering the added safety it would provide for less experienced riders.

In everyday use, the Moustache Clutch scores points with practical features: the Supernova lighting system offers reliable illumination, and the QL3.1-compatible rack keeps your weekly groceries securely in place – provided you’re using ORTLIEB bags designed for the system. The added load has little impact on the ride; the bike remains stable and easy to control. If you want to keep using your old panniers, that’s not a problem – but you’ll need to unscrew the QL3.1 mounting studs first. Speaking of everyday use: the battery removal process makes the Clutch less appealing for riders without a power outlet at their parking spot. As mentioned earlier – no one wants to have to flip their bike upside down just to recharge it.

Who is the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ For?

The Moustache Clutch is tailor-made for year-round riders who want to avoid the hassle of chain maintenance. The only catch: if the belt ever snaps – it’s not likely, but it’s not impossible – you’ll be stuck with few options. The odds of someone passing by with a spare belt are about as good as hitting a royal flush on your first poker hand. In urban everyday use, the Clutch is a solid performer, though the practical features of the Riese & Müller Delite5 GT Pinion are a bit more refined and user-friendly. On the trail, however, few bikes in this test can match the Moustache.

Conclusion – Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ SUV E Bike

The overall concept of the Moustache Clutch 150.7 EQ is well executed. The Pinion MGU is a perfect match for the SUV e bike segment: low-maintenance, quiet, and offering true hop-on, hop-off convenience without the hassle of chain upkeep. The ride feel is sporty, though somewhat limited by sluggish handling. Another drawback is the cumbersome battery removal. Still, the Clutch impresses with its versatility, thoughtful spec, and clear trail competence. If you’re not put off by the price tag, you’ll get a well-rounded package with good everyday usability.
