From dirt to asphalt! That’s Mondraker’s aim as they enter the SUV e bike segment with the Chaser X – packed with unmistakable eMTB DNA. Sounds exciting, but how well have the Spaniards pulled it off? We take a closer look at how practical the stock setup really is, and what’s behind their unique battery solution.

Mondraker are best known for their innovative, performance-oriented mountain bikes like the Crafty Carbon and the ultra-light Neat RR SL. But the Spanish bike brand want more – with the Chaser X and its bigger sibling, the Chaser RX, Mondraker take aim at the urban and crossover SUV e bike segment. The platform is based on the Chaser e-enduro bike, which Mondraker have dressed in more everyday clothes, while slightly reducing the travel. Instead of 160 mm and 150 mm like its enduro twin, the Mondraker Chaser X features 150 mm of travel up front and 140 mm at the rear. That should still make for a seriously capable bike – in terms of suspension travel, it’s only narrowly topped in this test field by the Moustache CLUTCH 150.7 EQ. But are a few mountain bike genes and urban add-ons enough to hold up against our competitive test field?

The Mondraker Chaser X is the most affordable SUV e bike in the entire test – priced € 600 below the CENTURION Lhasa R2000 at € 5,599. One thing immediately stands out: the Chaser X is the only bike in the test that doesn’t come with a dropper post. For us, that’s a serious drawback – especially on a bike with sporty ambitions, or an SUV used in city traffic, stopping at traffic lights every 500 metres. It’s particularly odd given its mountain bike ancestry. On the other hand, the ~€ 5,000 aluminium bike does save a bit of weight as a result and, at 26.6 kg, comes in just behind the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0.

If you’re a fan of Mondraker, be sure to keep an eye on the Chaser X’s big brother – the Mondraker Chaser RX. It costs around € 1,000 more but comes with a dropper post and a 750 Wh battery rather than the 625 Wh version on this model, which doesn’t quite meet our expectations for a proper SUV e bike. We’ve put the Chaser X through its paces to find out whether it can deliver in everyday use and on the trail.

Unique – and not in a good way. No easy hop-on, hop-off here. A rigid seatpost still comes standard, something we really shouldn’t be seeing in this category anymore.

What Makes the Mondraker Chaser X Special? A Mountain Bike for the Asphalt Jungle.

Visually, the Mondraker Chaser X follows its own path: the design language is sporty and minimalist. The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 Smart System motor is neatly integrated into the frame, and Mondraker pairs the modern drive unit with an older 625 Wh battery that still works with the Smart System, while keeping the silhouette slim and the weight low. One clear highlight is the tidy, well-organized cockpit. Less impressive, however, is the Intuvia 100 display mounted centrally on the stem. Compared to the rest of the test field, it feels a bit dated – showing only the essentials like battery level, estimated range, and light status on what feels like an old Nokia 3310 screen. Unfortunately you can’t play Snake on it while you’re waiting at traffic lights.

Clean and uncluttered – the Mondraker cockpit is much less busy than on most other SUV e bikes.

The Bosch Intuvia 100 display: old-school but functional – press a button to activate the backlight and the Game Boy lights up so you can play at night, hiding under the duvet.

The battery is unlocked with a key and removed upwards from the down tube. However, the process is rather fiddly: to release the final latch that frees the battery, you have to reach between the frame and the cover with your finger. Since the cover is part of the battery, and the gap to release the clip is so tight, even a multitool can struggle. Because the battery cover is permanently attached to the battery, there are no mounting points for a bottle cage on the down tube. Luckily, there are some mounting points underneath the top tube for a bottle cage or tool mount.

One wrong move and you’re losing a finger!

Let the mud mayhem begin! Mondraker really dropped the ball with this charging port placement.

The positioning of the charging port is also less than ideal: it sits close to the bottom bracket, on the underside of the down tube, right in the line of fire for all the muck and grime; it’s hard to think of a worse place they could’ve put it. The rubber cover doesn’t do much to help either; it came off entirely the second time we charged the bike. Mondraker clearly needs to improve this.

Tuning tip: Add a dropper post – the seat tube diameter is 31.6 mm. And for frequent city cruisers: don’t forget the bell!

MTB Meets Urban Traffic

Mudguards, lights, and a kickstand – that’s all it takes to turn a sporty eMTB into a city-ready SUV e bike, isn’t it? The fender integration on the Mondraker Chaser X is delicate but well executed. The front guard is long enough to keep your pants and shoes dry, while the rear light is integrated into the rear fender. However, it sits rather low, making it easy to miss in heavy city traffic.

The luggage rack may look unassuming, but it’s MIK-compatible, and rated for up to 25 kg of payload. That puts it in joint second place in our test field – just behind the massive rack of the Riese & Müller Delite5 GT Pinion – alongside the Kalkhoff Entice 7+ Excite ABS Wave and the Hercules NOS FS SUV 4.2. It’s more than ample for everyday use. However, the Mondraker Chaser X isn’t approved for towing a trailer – something which is perfectly reasonable for a mountain bike, but less so for an SUV e bike.

What is the Mondraker Chaser X SUV E Bike Capable Of?

SUV E Bike Vergleichstest Mondraker Chaser X WEB 26

Once you’ve set the rigid seatpost to the right height using the quick release clamp, the Mondraker Chaser X puts you in a fairly long, sporty riding position – noticeably more aggressive than on the Specialized Turbo Tero X 6.0 or the Haibike ADVENTR 11 ABS. The 800 mm wide handlebar (the widest in the test, together with that of the Hercules NOS FS SUV 4.2) can be shortened easily, but in stock form it contributes to the stretched-out posture. On the upside, the cockpit delivers excellent control and direct handling: steering inputs are translated precisely, giving the bike a confident and composed ride feel. However, the riding position can become tiring on long tours, especially for riders sensitive to increased pressure on their hands.

In everyday use, the Chaser X surprises with its composed ride on both asphalt and gravel. The MAXXIS IKON tires – the widest in the entire test field at 2.6” – roll quickly and efficiently thanks to their low-profile tread, no matter the surface. This makes it easy to pick up speed on paved roads, while the Bosch Performance Line CX motor delivers steady support. Hills all but disappear beneath the lightly treaded tires.

When the tarmac turns to trail, the Chaser X reveals its true nature. Rock gardens and root carpets are no problem for the RockShox suspension, with 150 mm of travel up front and 140 mm at the rear. Here, the Chaser X rides like a true eMTB – composed, stable, and predictable. What’s missing, however, is freedom of movement: without a dropper post, you quickly hit the bike’s limits off-road, despite its solid geometry. One component that impresses both on the trail and in city traffic is the SRAM DB8 brake, offering strong stopping power and a comfortable lever feel. However, the lack of ABS is a definite downside for an SUV e bike in this category.

A definite plus: Mondraker’s in-house lighting system reliably lights the way home after a late night at the office. The rack feels functional and sturdy – almost as if it were an integral part of the frame. The Intuvia 100 display provides all the key info with a little retro charm, and it’s clearly legible even in the dark, though it does need to be activated via the Mini Remote. One small drawback: the delicate front fender mount proves a little too flimsy on rough terrain, and starts to rattle at higher speeds.

What the Spaniards have overlooked in terms of everyday practicality, they partly make up for with compelling performance.

Who is the Mondraker Chaser X SUV E Bike For?

The Mondraker Chaser X is aimed at riders who want a sporty experience – whether on asphalt or off-road. It handles commuting, grocery runs, and the occasional trail session with ease. However, if you’re planning regular long-distance tours, you should keep an eye on the 625 Wh battery: the limited capacity can cause some range anxiety, and puts a cap on touring potential – just like the slightly increased pressure on your hands. Getting on and off the bike also reveals the Chaser X’s lack of comfort focus. The high top tube and absence of a dropper post make handling more challenging when stationary, especially for shorter riders. That said, if you’re deliberately looking for a sporty SUV e bike, the Chaser X delivers. Once rolling, it performs confidently on any terrain: composed, stable, and genuinely fun to ride. A bike for active riders who want more mountain bike than city cruiser.

Conclusion – Mondraker Chaser X SUV E Bike

There’s no doubt that Mondraker know how to build eMTBs. But in the SUV category, the overall concept of the Chaser X falls short of expectations. The hard-to-remove 625 Wh battery and awkwardly placed charging port limit its everyday practicality. While the bike scores points for its composed handling and sporty character, it struggles to stand out in this competitive test field, given the lack of a dropper post, and the outdated Intuvia 100 display. If you’re still drawn to the Chaser X, it’s definitely worth considering the better-equipped Mondraker Chaser RX, which comes with a dropper post and a larger battery.

  • Low weight

Flops

  • No dropper post
  • Fiddly battery removal
