NOX HYBRID eMTB with SACHS RS motor

NOX is one of the first bike manufacturers to use the new SACHS RS motor. With 112 Nm of torque, it’s one of the most powerful motors on the market, developed to provide even more power on the climb. Except for the new motor, however, nothing has changed.

It was only in 2019 that NOX presented a fully revised HYBRID eMTB bike line-up, which relied entirely on motors from German manufacturer Brose. Since then, things have changed and NOX is now one of the few manufacturers to provide customers with a choice of different motors. Alongside the 90 Nm top-end Brose Drive S Mag motor, NOX released a cheaper “downgraded” version of all their entry-level COMP models, which costs € 300 less and comes with a weaker and heavier Brose Drive S Alu motor. To complete the lineup, Nox throws in one more version with a powerful but also significantly heavier SACH RS motor, which churns out 112 Nm of torque.

The batteries of the NOX HYBRID models

For the batteries, NOX still rely on a chunky BMZ URV8, which is integrated in the squared downtube of the HYBRID models. The more powerful SACHS motor, which has a nominal voltage of 48 V, the engineers at NOX use 52 Li-Ion cells to reach a capacity of 650 Wh. Both Brose motors feed off a 630 Wh battery.

These 2020 NOX hybrid models will be available with a SACHS-RS motor

In addition to two hardtail versions, the XC Trail and XC Tour, NOX release two full-suspension eMTBs for tougher trail use, both of which feature a Sachs motor: the All Mtn 5.9, which has 160 mm of travel and the Enduro 7.1, which offers a whopping 180 mm of travel. The latter was already featured in our “best eMTB of 2020” group test, where we tested the version with the Brose motor. With all bikes from the NOX Hybrid lineup, one question arises: which motor and which wheel size should you choose? All frames are compatible with both 27.5 ”and 29” wheels.

Conclusion

In our test of the NOX HYBRID Enduro 7.1 with Brose Drive S motor, we were disappointed with the basic setup of the already very powerful Brose Drive S Mag. Back then, the bike didn’t provide enough support in the low support levels, delivered its power too abruptly in the higher modes and lacked the natural ride feeling we’re so fond of. We’re curious to see whether NOX have been able to address the issue by tuning – and thus taming – the even more powerful Sachs motor.
