New carbon frame and a motor upgrade – Giant present the new Trance X Advanced E+

At Giant, only carbon bikes carry the title Advanced. The Trance X E+ is designed to be the all-rounder in the Giant eMTB portfolio. For 2022, Giant are giving the new Trance X Advanced E+ a new SyncDrive Pro 2 motor and, for the first time, are speccing an eMTB with a carbon frame. We’ve got everything you need to know here.

With the Trance X E+, Giant have set their sights on trail bikers. This eMTB has 150 mm travel at the front, 140 mm at the rear and rolls on 29″ tyres. In our big eMTB group test, we found last year’s aluminium Giant Trance X E+ 1 to offer excellent performance on the uphills. For the upcoming 2022 season, Giant have given the Trance X a carbon frame for the first time, as well as fitting the new SyncDrive Pro 2 motor. This has been developed in cooperation with Yamaha, is slightly smaller, approximately 300 g lighter and, at 85 Nm, produces a little more torque. The battery capacity remains unchanged and the 625 Wh integrated down tube battery can still be expanded by 250 Wh with the EnergyPak Range Extender.

The minimalist Ride Control Ergo 3 remote is used on the handlebars. It sits inconspicuously next to the grips and its three buttons can be configured via an app so that they can be used on either the left or right side of the bars. If you wanted to, you could even install a remote on each side. Instead of an LCD display, Giant’s RideControlGo display uses two LED bars that are integrated into the top tube and provide information about the battery status and the motor support level.

The new Giant SyncDrive Pro 2 motor was developed in cooperation with Yamaha. It is smaller, lighter and with its 85 Nm torque, slightly stronger than its predecessor in last year’s aluminium Trance X E+.
The Ride Control Ergo 3 remote on the new Giant Trance X Advanced E+ is very discreet.
The new RideControlGo display on the top tube ditches complication and shows the battery status and motor assistance level at a glance.

Spec and components

The new Giant Trance X Advanced E+ will be available in three versions. For the top-end E+ 0 build as well as in the mid-spec E+ 1, the new Trance X comes with FOX’s electronic E-Live Valve suspension. The top-end Trance X Advanced E+0 has a Shimano XT groupset and rolls on carbon rims from Giant and will cost € 8,499 on the European market. The mid-level E+1 build can be yours for € 7,399, while the entry-level E+2 comes in at € 6,399. All models come with tires set up tubeless as standard.

The highlight of the Giant Trance X Advanced E+ 0 and E+ 1 models is definitely FOX’s electronic E-Live Valve system.

Geometry

The carbon frame has changed only minimally compared to the aluminium frame from last year. It will be available in four sizes from S to XL. The geometry can be changed between a high and low position via the flip chip in the headset. This adjusts the seat tube and head angle by 0.8° and the bottom bracket height by 10 mm. The low setting should increase stability when riding fast while the high setting should make the eMTB a little more agile overall.

New Giant Trance X Advanced E+ conclusion

While Giant have redeveloped almost every aspect of the motor system of the Trance X Advanced E+ from scratch, they have remained a lot more conservative when it comes to changes to the frame. Apart from a few minor details, the new carbon frame is essentially a replica of the existing aluminium frame. We’ll tell you how the ride has changed on the new Trance X Advanced after we’ve had a chance to test the new build for ourselves.

Rudolf Fischer

In his previous life Rudolf was a dab hand at promoting innovation, putting his brain behind big-ticket patent assessments that easily ran into six-or-seven-plus figures. These days, the self-confessed data nerd’s role as editor at DOWNTOWN and E-MOUNTAINBIKE is no less exciting. Given his specialism in connectivity, Rudolf’s often placed on the front line of future mobility conversations, but he’s also big into testing new bikes–both on the daily as a committed commuter and intensively for our group tests. The business economist graduate is as versatile as a Swiss penknife, and that’s no hyperbole. Away from two wheels, his background in parkour means he’s a master of front, side and backflips, plus he speaks German, English, French, Russian and a touch of Esperanto. Japanese remains woefully unmastered, despite his best home-learning attempts. Good to know: Rudolf’s sharp tongue has made him a figure of fear in the office, where he’s got a reputation for flexing a dry wittiness à la Ricky Gervais... interestingly, he's usually the one laughing hardest.
