The Canyon Neuron:ON has been on the market for little more than a year and the German direct to consumer brand is already presenting an updated model. As with the Grand Canyon:ON, the focus of their latest eMTB has been put on system integration, but there are other exciting innovations besides. Read on for all the details.

Canyon Neuron:ON 9.0 | € 4,499 | Shimano STEPS E800 504 Wh | 29″ | Manufacturer’s website

With 130 mm travel, front and rear, balanced geometry and a classy looking aluminium frame, the new Canyon Neuron:ON is aimed at trail riders looking for an easy-handling and versatile eMTB on a budget. In sizes M, L and XL, the bike comes with 29“ wheels for the best trail performance. Since smaller riders tend to struggle with the handling of bigger wheels, frame sizes S and XS roll on 27.5“ wheels and also feature adapted suspension kinematics, specifically tuned for lighter riders.

Besides the wheel size, Canyon have also adapted the suspension kinematics of the Small and X-Small Neuron:ON to suit smaller riders and guarantee optimal suspension performance

Regardless of size, the bike is driven by Shimano’s STEPS E8000 motor and a 504 Wh battery. One advantage of the Shimano system is the excellent international service network that customers can fall back on in the event of a defect, besides the motor’s relatively low weight and compact dimensions. For the advantages mentioned above, Canyon were willing to accept the fact that Shimano currently “only” offer a 504 Wh battery.

The Shimano E7000 display is well protected behind the handlebar and provides all the necessary information in a legible manner. It’s also compatible with Shimano’s E-Ride app, allowing you to transfer all of your ride data onto your smartphone.

System integration and smart features – the highlights of the Neuron:ON

In designing their latest ebikes, Canyon have shifted more of their focus on system integration, hiding the battery in the down tube, among other improvements. Of course, the battery is still removable. The new Neuron:ON now also features a nice looking on/off button on the top tube, next to which they’ve integrated an USB-C charging port for your smartphone or GPS device. You can also use it to power a headlight, which is practical.

The spoke magnet is firmly integrated into the brake rotor. This way it can’t twist or fall off.

Besides the obvious changes, Canyon have also made many small improvements in the details of the 2020 Neuron:ON that aren’t merely skin-deep. The bike features a new, composite motor cover which has been dropped down around the chainring to double as a bash guard. The magnet for the speed sensor has been integrated into the brake rotor, and with Canyon’s new ON:Cockpit, the cables of the Shimano system are routed through the handlebar and stem, keeping things tidy and rattle-free. The specially developed direct-mount chainring and the colour-matched battery cover also add to the bike’s clean look.

Though standard on a black frame, the covers are matched to the frame in every available colour, making for a clean and slender looking bike.
Developed by Canyon in-house, the ON-handlebar features internal routing for the cables of the electronics, keeping clutter and noise to a minimum.
Lots of room – with the specially developed grips, the clamps are concealed to improve comfort and offer a larger grip surface
Thanks to the integrated seat clamp, the seat post is clamped over a large surface area, which prevents it from being damaged

Focussed on performance and weight – the componentry

The Neuron:ON represents the entry into Canyon’s full-suspension eMTB range. Prices vary between € 3,599–€ 4,499, depending on the model. They all come equipped with a wide-range, 12-speed Shimano drivetrain, as well as a steel freehub for extended service life and long-lasting fun. Dropper seat posts are also standard throughout, as well as the SD:ON saddle with its raised rear end for more support on steep climbs, as developed by Canyon. You get a four-piston brake up front and a two-piston version at the rear paired with 200 mm brake rotors to ensure sufficient deceleration.

Canyon rely on Schwalbe’s Apex casing for the 2.6” tires. These aren’t the most robust models available, but they should suit the bike’s purpose.

Every bike in the range comes with Canyon’s Iridium dropper post, offering increased comfort and instilling you with confidence.

The most exciting model regarding value for money is the € 3,999 Neuron:ON 8.0, which is specced with a FOX 34 Rhythm fork and a DPS Performance shock. All bikes are supplied with a new 2M-charger, which takes a whopping 7.5 hours to fully charge the battery. For faster charging times, you can add the 4M-charger to your order as an optional extra. Canyon justify their decision to supply the bike with a 2M-charger with the fact that it’s cheaper, which allows them to lower the price of the bikes.

Minimal geometry changes for the Neuron:ON

Almost nothing on the geometry of the Neuron:ON has been changed. Compared to the predecessor, only the seat tube angle has been steepened by 0.5° to slightly improve its climbing performance. Like its predecessor, the new Neuron:ON is available in five sizes from XS–XL, allowing riders from 153–192 cm to join in on the fun. The key dimensions, including the reach and head angle, are rather conservative, which seems to suit the bike’s intended versatility.

Availability and delivery of the Neuron:ON

The new Neuron:ON is now available on Canyon’s website and can either be delivered directly to your door, as is usual with direct to consumer brands, or you can pick it up at Canyon’s headquarters in Koblenz, Germany. The bike gets delivered in Canyon’s specially designed Bike Guard:ON box, which you can simply roll the bike out of, no heavy lifting required. All that’s left for you to do is mount the handlebar, adjust the suspension and tire pressure and off you go.

Straighten the handlebar, adjust the suspension, adjust the tire pressure and the Neuron:ON is ready to hit the trails!

Our first impression of the Canyon Neuron:ON

With the updated Neuron:ON, Canyon have made a good eMTB for long rides even better. The integration of the battery makes for a cleaner look and various smaller improvements show careful attention to detail. The Neuron:ON is a well-priced, good-natured and versatile eMTB. Trail riders with a hankering for downhill performance remain better advised to go with the Spectral:ON.
