Mondraker advertise the Dune RR as an electrified super enduro bruiser, and the most aggressive light eMTB in their portfolio. It relies on a Bosch Performance Line SX motor, 400 Wh battery and mullet wheel configuration, generating 170/165 mm of travel. How did it perform against the competition in our 2024 light eMTB comparison test?

Mondraker primarily focus on gravity-oriented eMTBs, and also offer a wide range of analogue bikes. At the beginning of the year, we visited the Spanish manufacturer in neighbouring Portugal to take a look at the new Mondraker Dune RR out on the trails of Sintra. While its little sibling the Neat RR SL (which already appeared in our big e-mountainbike comparison test positions itself in the trail segment, the Dune RR is designed for rough stuff. So how did the 19.72 kg Spaniard fare against the competition on our rocky test track in the Paganella Bike Park?

What sets the Mondraker Dune apart from the competition?

The Mondraker Dune RR takes on the competition with a plain yet very elegant paint finish, with the base colour merging into two additional colours. The Dune RR retains a lot of Mondraker’s classic features, with a split seat tube and a cut-out in the head tube, making for quite a distinctive bike. A generously sized chainstay protector prevents paint chips and chain slap, while a small fender on the seat tube shields the shock against muck and debris. Alongside two conventional mounting points on the downtube, Mondraker provide a FIDLOCK mount on the underside of the top tube, which allows you to carry a second water bottle directly on the frame, or any of FIDLOCK’s other accessories. All cables are routed internally, disappearing into the frame through the head tube. This ensures a clean overall look, though also makes it harder to service the bike. The Bosch Performance Line SX motor system also contributes to the overall harmonious look. This delivers 55 Nm of torque and 600 watts of peak power, and is seamlessly integrated into the bottom bracket area, blending in discreetly with the frame silhouette. The motor draws its power from a 400 Wh Bosch CompactTube battery, which is permanently integrated into the down tube. For longer tours, the capacity can be expanded using the optional 250 Wh Bosch PowerMore Range Extender, which fits into the bottle cage on the down tube. The battery can be charged via a charging port in the frame triangle by the motor. The motor is paired with a Bosch Kiox 500 display, which provides all of the basic riding data, and also includes a rudimentary navigation function. Although the Mondraker Dune features the most connectivity features in this test, the exposed front display is vulnerable in the event of a crash. We recommend using the Bosch System Controller in the top tube, which shows the most important basic information about the motor system at a glance.

The FIDLOCK mount on the underside of the top tube can be used to carry a water bottle or as a tool mount.

For the spec, Mondraker rely exclusively on top-tier components, including an Öhlins RXF38 M.2 fork and a TTX Air shock. Both offer countless adjustment options, but take a little more time than the competition to set up. At 170 mm, Mondraker’s in-house ONOFF PIJA dropper post is too short for a modern enduro bike, and can’t be fully inserted into the frame either, due to the split seat tube. Needless to say, this severely restricts freedom of movement on the trail. SRAM CODE Bronze Stealth brakes do stopping duties, paired with 200 mm rotors front and rear. SRAM also supply the GX Eagle Transmission drivetrain, which relies on a direct-mount rear derailleur and enables shifting under load. The Mondraker Dune RR rolls on an E*thirteen Grappler Race alloy mullet wheelset, with a 29″ wheel at the front and smaller 27.5″ wheel at the rear. Mondraker really nailed it with the tires, combining a MAXXIS ASSEGAI in the grippy MaxxGrip rubber compound and EXO+ casing at the front, and a Minion DHR II in the harder MaxxTerra rubber compound and robust Doubledown casing at the rear – awesome!

A sandstorm, or just hot air? The Mondraker Dune on the trail

We didn’t ride the Mondraker Dune RR over any sand dunes – we thought it would be more constructive to hit the trails at the Paganella Bike Park. When you drop into a trail, you’re nicely integrated between the wheels, and the weight is evenly distributed between the front and rear. The Dune RR feels spacious and long, which is due to the generous reach values and long wheelbase. This is exactly what Mondraker want to achieve with their Forward Geometry, which is intended to increase stability and inspire confidence at higher speeds. On the trail, this is clearly noticeable, and the Mondraker Dune RR impresses with outstanding composure in rough trail sections, although it doesn’t quite match the outstanding composure of the MERIDA eONE-SIXTY 10K and the YT Decoy SN. Due to its big dimensions, the Mondraker Dune RR isn’t quite as agile through corners as the nimblest bikes in this test, the Specialized S-Works Turbo Levo SL and Santa Cruz Heckler SL. On our rocky test track, the Dune RR impresses with its excellent suspension performance, responding sensitively to small bumps and generating tons of traction, while providing enough support to pump through rollers and berms, and bailing you out with botched landings. When the trail gets steeper and you want to shift your centre of gravity further back, the dropper post severely restricts your freedom of movement. We recommend upgrading to a long-travel dropper, with a shorter insertion depth.

The Öhlins suspension generates good traction uphill, while the Bosch Performance Line SX motor provides powerful support.

On the way back to the trailhead, the Mondraker Dune is a little rear-heavy, but it still places you in a comfortable pedalling position, with the high front end inspiring huge amounts of confidence. On steep climbs, however, you’ll have to actively weight the front wheel to keep it tracking. The Bosch Performance Line SX motor provides powerful support on the climbs, but requires a slightly higher cadence at lower speeds. Pedal a little faster, and the power is transferred via the sensitive rear suspension, providing plenty of traction to get you up technical climbs.

The potent suspension of the Dune RR responds sensitively to small bumps, but still offers enough support to pump through rollers and berms – and it even bails you out with botched landings.

Who should take a closer look at the Mondraker Dune?

The Mondraker Dune RR appeals above all to downhill-oriented riders who value composed, potent suspension for technical descents. The high level of connectivity is a plus for stats enthusiasts, who can read all the data from the Bosch Kiox 500 display, and also operate additional features – such as the rudimentary navigation function and eBike Lock function – via the eBike Flow app, directly from their smartphone.

Our conclusions about the Mondraker Dune

The Mondraker Dune RR is a reliable all-rounder that ticks all the boxes, without excelling in any particular aspect. The Spanish light eMTB impresses with excellent composure and strong suspension. In tight corners, however, it doesn’t have the agility required to clock the fastest times. The smart Bosch Performance SX motor offers many connectivity features and powerful support, placing the Dune RR comfortably in the midfield of our comparison test.

Tops

  • Excellent composure
  • Potent suspension
  • Bosch motor system enables good connectivity

Flops
