SRAM Guide RE – BEST VALUE

SRAM’s latest addition to their lineup, the Guide RE, is aimed squarely at domination of the E-MTB sector. The Guide RE brakes are a fusion of SRAM’s ergonomic Guide R lever with their powerful and race proven four-piston caliper from the gravity-focused Code brakes. The Guide RE lever features a reach adjust, which although a little notchy, allows precise adjustment of the blade position, and the action is both smooth and precise. In the lab, the Guide RE showed its authority over the S4 caliper used in the SRAM Guide Ultimate, stopping the dyno with an average force of 112 Nm and delivering eye-watering deceleration times. On the trail, we could see why SRAM are so proud of this brake: they delivered reliable and authoritative deceleration with a perfectly consistent bite point that never wandered.

Even on very steep terrain and with heavier testers, the SRAM Guide RE did not disappoint, and despite their average performance in the lab fade test, the Code calipers laughed off our attempts to overheat them on long runs. As with all the Guide range, they do howl like angry turkeys when they get wet, but never let up their grip. Priced at only €145, no other brake offers so much for so little, and they thus scoop our BEST VALUE award with ease. We expect to see the SRAM Guide RE brakes fitted to many E-MTBs in 2017, and deservedly so.
