FOCUS JAM² Overview
The FOCUS JAM² has 150 mm travel which is delivered via the patented F.O.L.D. suspension linkage. That makes the JAM² the most trail-performance oriented Bosch bike in FOCUS’ portfolio. As mentioned, the JAM² will continue to exist with the Shimano STEPS E8000 motor, but now four new Bosch models are being added to the range.
In comparison with the Shimano model, the Bosch versions have 20 mm more reach, 30 mm shorter chainstays, the head angle is 0.5° slacker and the seat angle has increased by 1°. Thanks to the flip-chip, you can choose between 27.5” or 29” wheels and those who want to can, of course, run a mix of wheel sizes (29” front / 27.5” rear).
Why is the new JAM² available with both a Shimano and Bosch motor
We sat down with the people at FOCUS to find out why the new JAM² is now available with both the Shimano STEPS motor and Bosch’s brand-new Performance Line CX 2020. What’s the difference between the two bikes, apart from the motor? And most importantly, which version of the JAM² is the right one for you?
If you can’t decide between the Bosch Performance Line CX and the Shimano STEPS, I recommend you choose the motor according to your specific needs and personal riding style. If you’re after a playful bike and you’re unlikely to ride for more than one to two hours at a time, mainly on fast-paced after-work laps, then the JAM² with additional T.E.C. battery (Shimano motor) might be your first choice. Thanks to its light carbon frame and the deliberately minimalist battery, the bike is significantly lighter than most other eMTBs. However, with a 756 Wh battery (with the T.E.C. Pack mounted) our T.E.C. bikes are also a superb option for extremely long rides which require huge range. Our bikes with a Bosch Performance CX 2020 motor and 625 Wh battery sit right in between these categories and are therefore the optimal choice for both long and short rides. With respect to the geometry, our new bikes with the Bosch system are designed to run smoother and those with a Shimano motor are designed to provide a more playful riding style. – Patrick Laprell, Brand Manager FOCUS
The developmental leap we made between the first rendition of the Bosch motor and the latest 2020 model couldn’t be more dramatic. With its very compact size, the new motor allows engineers to develop geometries and kinematics which reflect our idea of eMTBing. Downhill-oriented, light-footed and playful. Furthermore, there is the positive effect that the bigger chainring has on suspension kinematics – because this is the only way we could design a sensitive yet efficient chassis. – Fabian Scholz, Lead Engineer
Our new JAM² is the bike ideal bike for all those riders who get a massive grin on their face whenever they hit the trails. While developing the new JAM², we focused on the core elements of mountain biking: a good frame with clever kinematics, powerful brakes, an active suspension system and a reliable drivetrain. To top it all off, we use the new Bosch Performance CX motor. We’re now focusing on different price points and attractive specs options for all types of eMTBers. True to the name of our campaign: ‘E is for everyone’. – Moritz Failenschmid, Director of Brand Management
