The new Specialized S-Works Levo R aims to strike the perfect balance between trail capability and riding fun. As a short-travel eMTB, it’s designed to take the sting out of technical climbs while ensuring plenty of fun and agility on the descents. Within Specialized’s line-up, it slots in below the versatile Levo 4 and the more gravity-focused Levo EVO.
Even at first glance, the Levo R makes it clear that it wants to be more than just another eMTB. The S-Works logo on the downtube proudly showcases its premium credentials, while the green paint finish looks classy and refined. The organic frame design is appealing, although the proportions aren’t perfectly balanced. The relatively small rocker link bearings sit alongside a very bulky downtube, which makes the frame look slightly mismatched.
At € 13,999 the Levo R S-Works flagship model is one of the most expensive bikes in the entire test field. At the same time, the system weight of just 21.49 kg in size S4 places it firmly among the lightest contenders on test. That leaves one key question: can the Levo R translate its premium ambitions into truly exceptional trail performance?
The Specialized S-Works Levo R in Detail
The S-Works Levo R sets a high bar for frame detailing. Bonded protectors on the seatstay and chainstay are thorough and leave a robust, durable impression, while the small cover between the main frame and rear triangle is bolted directly to the frame and feels noticeably more premium than the rubber covers commonly found elsewhere.
Cable routing is just as neat. All cables, including the motor remote wire, enter the frame through cable ports and are neatly guided internally. This contributes to the bike’s exceptionally clean appearance and keeps everything completely rattle-free on the trail. The charging port cover is another well-thought-out feature. Spring-loaded and secured magnetically, it integrates seamlessly into the bike, both visually and functionally.
The spec of the Specialized S-Works Levo R
For the drive system, Specialized rely on a motor developed in-house in close collaboration with Brose, which the Californian manufacturer has refined extensively with its own technology and tuning. While the drive unit remains relatively bulky in appearance, the latest power update boosts output to an impressive 111 Nm of maximum torque and 850 watts of peak power. That makes it one of the most powerful motor systems not only in this group test but also on the current market.
The motor draws its power from a big 840 Wh battery, which can be removed from the side of the frame using the multitool integrated into the headset. The system is also exceptionally versatile thanks to the option of fitting a smaller 600 Wh battery or adding a range extender. This allows you to tailor the Levo R precisely to different riding scenarios and priorities. Another practical touch is the small storage compartment above the battery inside the down tube, a feature that remains a rarity among e-mountainbikes.
The Levo R matches the standard Levo 4 when it comes to usability and charging. The MasterMind TCU display integrated into the top tube impresses with its high-resolution screen, clear graphics and extensive customisation options. Specialized’s companion app complements the package well, offering a broad range of features, intuitive operation and useful tuning options.
The included 12A charger is a mixed bag. Large, heavy and far from elegant, it nonetheless delivers exceptional charging performance and adjustable charging settings, making it the most powerful charger in the group test, surpassed only by the DJI Avinox unit. Suspension duties fall to proven FOX components: a FOX 36 SL Factory fork with GRIP X damper providing 140 mm of travel up front, and a FOX FLOAT Genie Factory shock controlling 130 mm of rear-wheel travel. Both offer extensive adjustability and deliver strong trail performance.
Shifting duties are taken care of by a SRAM XX Eagle Transmission drivetrain, which draws its power directly from the main battery. The dropper post also comes from SRAM. The electronic SRAM Reverb AXS offers 200 mm of travel, although its relatively tall stack height and limited insertion depth slightly restrict freedom of movement for riders with shorter legs.
The Levo R boasts a well-judged spec that successfully balances the difficult trade-off between low weight and a robust, trail-ready build.
The SRAM Motive Ultimate brakes also delivered a surprisingly strong performance in our test. Paired with 200 mm HS2 rotors, they provide powerful, confidence-inspiring deceleration and perform far better than many riders might expect.
The remaining components come from Specialized’s own portfolio. The Levo R rolls on robust Roval Traverse SL carbon wheels fitted with Specialized Purgatory tyres, using a GRID Trail casing at the rear and a lighter GRID casing up front. The front tyre uses the softer T9 compound, while the rear gets the firmer T7 version. It’s a well-matched setup for a bike in this category, although upgrading the front tyre to the more robust GRID Trail casing is a worthwhile improvement. Rounding out the package is the Roval Control SL Rise cockpit. It gives the bike an exceptionally clean look, though it offers less scope for individual adjustment than a conventional handlebar and stem combination.

The Specialized S-Works Levo R on the Trail
How good is the Specialized S-Works Levo R uphill?
The S-Works Levo R feels instantly at home on the climbs. Much like the standard Levo 4, it inspires confidence from the very first crank spin, although the Levo R feels even more direct and responsive. The slightly lower front end plays a key role here, allowing for more pressure on the front wheel and creating a very active riding position. As a result, the bike climbs exceptionally well and quickly gives you the feeling of being perfectly centred on the bike.
A large part of that performance is, of course, down to the S-Works 3.1 motor. It delivers plenty of power while maintaining a refined, precise and remarkably natural ride feel. Assistance arrives exactly when you need it, and the motor tuning strikes an excellent balance between outright power, precise control and impressive traction. Particularly on technical climbs, the system stands out with its combination of strength and predictability.
The rear suspension complements this character perfectly. It works efficiently, remains composed under pedalling and converts your effort into forward momentum with very little energy loss, all while maintaining impressive traction.
In technical climbing sections especially, the Levo R ranks among the very best climbers in the entire test field. Overall traction is excellent, although the short-knobbed, relatively fast-rolling tyres can reach their limits on very steep terrain or when calling on the motor’s full power in an instant. In those situations, the rear wheel breaks traction slightly earlier than the motor’s capabilities would otherwise allow.
How does the Specialized S-Works Levo R perform on the descents?
Riding downhill, the Levo R places you in a well-centred and deeply integrated riding position. From the very first metres, the handling feels intuitive, agile and remarkably cohesive. The direct response makes it easy to pick your lines with great precision, and ensures a ride feel that strongly resembles the Thömus Lightrider E_MAX: nimble, lively and characterised by a similarly low front end that gives the bike a very direct character.
Compared to the standard Levo 4, the Levo R feels lighter on its feet, more agile and more playful, while still retaining much of the composed and confidence-inspiring character that defines the Levo platform.
The Levo R truly comes into its own on flowing trails. This is where the bike shines, delivering an outstanding level of fun and engagement. You can generate speed effortlessly by pumping through the terrain, carry huge amounts of momentum through berms and constantly feel encouraged to make the most of every roller, trail feature and lip. Catching airtime becomes almost second nature aboard the Levo R. The fast-rolling tires further enhance this lively character, giving the bike an extra dose of speed and responsiveness. In terms of outright fun, it sits alongside bikes such as the MERIDA LITHOS and Megamo REASON, while on flow trails only the Propain Sresh SL can genuinely match its agility.
This character is supported by the relatively firm suspension, which provides plenty of feedback from the ground without ever feeling harsh. The suspension remains sensitive enough to track the ground effectively, offers a reassuring degree of forgiveness when mistakes happen and perfectly complements the bike’s sporty, playful nature.
Despite its lively handling, the Levo R remains composed in rough terrain and rock gardens, inspiring confidence and delivering a high level of control. Suspension reserves are sufficient for its travel category, handling bigger impacts without complaint. Outright stability does not quite match the heavier, more downhill-focused bikes in the test, but the gap is smaller than the weight and travel figures might suggest. The result is a bike that pairs exceptional agility with enough composure and capability to excel when the terrain turns demanding.
On flowing trails, the Levo R is a real fun machine. It’s easy to pump through the terrain, flick effortlessly from one line to another and carry speed from feature to feature with remarkable ease.
Who is the Specialized S-Works Levo R the right eMTB for?
The Levo R is aimed primarily at riders looking for an exceptionally agile, intuitive and playful eMTB that delivers huge amounts of fun on the descents while also ranking among the stronger climbers in the test field. It is not a bike that prioritises absolute stability above all else. Instead, it has a clear trail-focused character and feels most at home when ridden actively, making the most of the terrain and embracing a dynamic, playful riding style.

Flow trail enthusiasts
If your idea of a great ride involves pumping terrain, pushing through berms, playing with every trail feature and hunting for airtime, you’ll feel at home on the Levo R in no time. No other bike in this test field combines this level of agility with so much outright fun.
Technical climbing specialists
If you’re looking for an eMTB that combines powerful assistance, precise control and a light-footed ride feel on the climbs, the Levo R is one of the strongest performers in the test. It particularly shines on technical ascents, where its excellent traction, efficient rear suspension and superb motor tuning come into their own.
Not the right bike for:
Fans of understatement
If you want a bike whose light-footed character is reflected in a subtle, understated appearance, the Levo R may not win you over at first glance. On the trail, it rides significantly lighter and more agile than its rather bulky full-power appearance initially suggests.
High-speed chargers
If your priority is maximum stability, relentless straight-line composure and outright speed through rough terrain, there are more suitable options in this test field. The Levo R remains composed and capable, but its focus is clearly more on agility and playfulness than all-out stability.

The S-Works Levo R is not a stripped-back Levo 4. It’s a distinct eMTB with a serious appetite for fun, and it makes that case convincingly in both directions. On the climbs, a powerful yet finely controllable motor delivers outstanding performance on technical ascents. On the descents, handling is exceptionally agile and intuitive, with a playful character that holds its composure when the trail turns rough. On flow trails in particular, it ranks among the best bikes in the entire test field. The flexible battery concept and well-chosen specification strengthen the package further, with only the dropper post and cockpit holding it back from a higher score. At a correspondingly premium price, the Levo R is one of the standout performers of the group test.
