One of the absolute highlights during the recent Eurobike Media Days was the presentation of the new Conway XYRON models. Conway’s latest range is fitted with the new Bosch Performance Line 2020 motor and will be available with both an aluminium and carbon frame. However, the difference between the two options isn’t based on price alone.

Conway XYRON 827 Carbon | Bosch Performance Line CX/625 Wh battery | 140/140 mm (f/r) | € 5,999
The aluminium version of the XYRON starts at € 3,699. The XYRON 327 pictured here will set you back € 4,199

Conway’s E-Mountainbikes have performed well in our group tests several times in the past. However, they all had the same catch: invariably the looks didn’t quite match the good ride. That has changed with the new Conway XYRON, which makes an excellent first impression even at a cursory glance. All the XYRON models are powered by the new Bosch Performance Line CX motor and are fitted with an integrated 625 Wh battery in the down tube. All the bikes have 140 mm travel front and rear and roll on 27.5” wheels fitted with 2.6” tires. All the XYRON models are available in four different sizes, though there are some pronounced differences between the aluminium and carbon models.

All bikes except the most affordable model are fitted with a large 625 Wh PowerTube battery
All models come with a dropper post as standard…
… and have 200 mm disc rotors at both ends.
A bit of a faux pas: Conway continues to use the traditional spoke magnet for the speed sensor – we would have preferred a more cleanly integrated solution.
All the cables are routed internally and enter on the right side of the head tube
Both versions of the frame can fit a bottle cage
The charging port is easy to reach at the top of the down tube
Nice details: hidden suspension pivots on the carbon frame.
A small mudguard protects the shock from mud and debris

XYRON Carbon = race ready, Aluminium = relaxed comfort

No, we’re not talking about the characteristics of the frame material. Conway has changed the geometry and some key details of the frame between the carbon and aluminium versions. The Conway XYRON is aimed at the more sporty rider who is looking to have the most fun possible on the trails. The main triangle is a little longer with a more stretched out riding position that results in more stable handling. In contrast, the aluminium version of the XYRON puts you in a more upright position and the frame can be fitted with a side stand or even luggage racks. Both the XYRON C427 and XYRON C227 are offered as standard with mudguards, luggage racks, lights and a side stand.

The carbon version doesn’t just look sporty, the geometry is also designed for more aggressive riders
In contrast, the aluminium XYRON models are furnished with mounts for mudguards…
… and even a side stand if you need one

Pricing and components specs of the Conway XYRON models

The Conway XYRON E-Mountainbikes start at the reasonable price of € 3,699, with which you get the entry-level XYRON 227 with a RockShox Recon RL fork, Shimano Deore 10-speed gearing and a 500 Wh battery (the only model with the smaller battery). Pricing goes all the way up to € 7,999 for the generously specced XYRON 927 Carbon with SRAM X01 Eagle AXS groupset, RockShox Pike Ultimate fork and DT Swiss HX1200 carbon wheels. A particular positive is that all bikes in the range are fitted with large 200 mm disc rotors as well as a dropper post. As regards value for money, the XYRON 727 Carbon at € 5,299 and the aluminium XYRON 527 at € 5,199 are the most interesting models. Overall, Conway offers three carbon and six aluminium XYRON models.

Our first impressions of the new Conway XYRON

The new Conway XYRON models make a promising first impression with cleaned-up looks and well-thought-out details. As we’ve come to expect from Conway, the pricing is very reasonable and the components are carefully specced. If the bikes can live up to the performance of the existing WME models, then we’re very excited for a full test!
