Canyon Grand Canyon:ON announced – Canyon’s first eMTB hardtail

Having equipped both their Spectral and Neuron models with a motor in the last few years, now Canyon have electrified the Grand Canyon too. Drumroll for the Grand Canyon:ON please! You can find out more about the unique features of this Shimano motor-equipped, 29er aluminium eMTB hardtail here.

With the Grand Canyon:ON, the brand has started a new chapter for its eMTBs. This isn’t just its first eMTB hardtail but also the first eMTB from Canyon that features a fully integrated battery. The creates space for a whole two bottles in the main triangle. The sleek down tube encloses a 504 Wh battery that powers the Shimano STEPS E8000 motor. The battery can either be removed from the bottom of the down tube or left on the bike for charging. Both the display and remote are compact options from the E7000 range. Excellent! We’ve already seen the USB-C port on the top tube on both the Spectral:ON and Neuron:ON and it also features here. The power switch for the Grand Canyon:ON is just next to it.

Canyon’s typical top tube USB-C-Port is also present on the Grand Canyon:ON. The power button is right next to it.

Canyon haven’t just worked on integrating the battery, but also do the same with the cockpit. In order to route the display and remote cables, Canyon have developed a special stem and bar. Both are fitted to the Grand Canyon:ON resulting in a very tidy cockpit. Canyon have also added a stand mount to their newest model. All bikes are fitted with 2.6″ tires and equipped with four-pot brakes. The XS and S bikes come with 180 mm disc rotors while the M, L and XL are fitted with 203 mm rotors. A further unique feature of the XS and S sizes is the ACROS Blocklock, that prevents the fork crown from hitting the down tube. The XS bike has a 100 mm travel fork, while all others in the range come with a 120 mm fork.

The Canyon Grand Canyon:ON models

There are three different models of the aluminium eMTB, one of which is the women’s specific Grand Canyon:ON WMN 8.0 available in two colours and sizes XS, S and M. The unisex versions are available in three different colours. At the entry level, you can buy the Grand Canyon:ON 8.0 and Grand Canyon:ON WMN 8.0 for € 2,799. The top end Grand Canyon:ON 9.0 is available for € 3,299 and is the only model in the range to be fitted with a dropper post. However, it won’t be suitable for shorter riders as the frame isn’t available in a size XS. While the two 8.0 models are fitted with Shimano Deore 1×10 drivetrains, the 9.0 model comes with a mixed Shimano XT/SLX 1×12 groupset. The top model is equipped with a FOX 34 Rhythm fork while the other versions are fitted with a RockShox Judy Silver. At 21.7 kg (manufacturer’s specification), the 9.0 model weighs a whole 300 g more than the other models.

Grand Canyon:ON geometry

As we’ve come to expect from the German brand, particular attention is given to adapting the smaller frame sizes to optimise handling for smaller riders. That means that the XS and S bikes come with 27.5″ wheels and tires, while M, L and XL sizes are fitted with 29″ wheels. Similar to the wheels, Canyon has also optimised the geometry for XS and S frames. The chainstays are 15 mm shorter and the head tube angle 1° slacker than the M, L and XL sizes. The high front end of the bike should offer a feeling of security on steep terrain and the 68° head tube angle of the M, L and XL sizes is 2° slacker than the non-motorised Grand Canyon. The dropper post is available with 125 mm in size S and 150 mm for all other sizes.

Our first impressions of the Canyon Grand Canyon:ON

The Grand Canyon:ON presents itself as a solid 29″ eMTB hardtail companion for tours and moderate trails. As we’ve come to expect, Canyon have chosen to spec a Shimano motor and 504 Wh battery, though for the first time the battery is fully integrated in the down tube. In addition, Canyon have cleaned up the cockpit by hiding all electronic cables inside the bars and stem. We’re curious to see whether this trend towards integration will continue in the rest of Canyon’s eMTB models and how the Grand Canyon:ON will ride on the trails!
