Now eBikers can flash each other too – effective since the 1 of June 2017, a new law has been passed (§67) allowing for low and high beam lighting systems on bicycles. And supernova has taken the lead with their new addition to the M99 family, the M99 Mini Pro 25. We got one as soon as we could, to find out what the new light can do in practice.

Supernova M99 Mini
The Supernova M99 Mini Pro 25 is only half the size of its predecessor, the M99 PURE

Supernova has been developing and manufacturing high-quality bicycle lights for almost 20 years. With the new and improved M99 Mini Pro 25, the Freiburg-based company now offer a light that is half the size and 40% lighter than its predecessor. Made of anodised aluminium and StVZO certified, it’s been permitted on German roads since the beginning of June and features a high- and low-beam, among other things. A specially made bracket allows it to be neatly integrated to a Bosch head unit, but if you don’t have a Bosch system with the Monkey Link, you’ll be able to mount it on most other eBikes. The light runs on the eBike’s battery via an adapter cable. For non-eBikes, you can connect it to a standard power bank via a USB cable (not included), so that you can benefit from the M99 Mini Pro 25’s features, even if you don’t have an eBike.

Whether on the road or on the trail: The Supernova M99 Mini Pro 25 convinces with its even illumination. In the low-beam setting, the 600 lumens are sufficient to give you the secure feeling of being recognised as a fully-fledged road user in an urban environment. Due to the down and sideward angle of illumination, oncoming road users are not blinded. Not so once you switch on the high beam: The 1,250 lumens enlarge the light beam considerably, shining higher, further, and wider. For this reason, it is recommended you use the high beam only out of town, on forest roads or on single track. Once on narrow and winding trails, however, the M99 Mini Pro 25 shows what it’s capable of.

On the trail, the M99 Mini Pro 25 reveals the power of its 1,250 lumens.

High beam also has other advantages, especially on mountain bikes, because when the suspension fork dives during braking, the light beam obviously drops also – the same applies to rollers and steep angles going up or down. If either the front of the bike drops or the trail suddenly goes up, the light’s range shortens and poses a potential health risk. With the high beam switched on you will still be able to see very far head without having to stop to reorient yourself. With a light thumb-press on the remote, you can switch between high and low beam. You know you’re in high beam when the icon on the remote is lit up in blue.

The low beam is set so that oncoming traffic isn’t dazzled.
The light of the 1,250 lumens of high beam mode shines a lot higher, wider, and further.

Conclusion

The high-quality workmanship and attractive design of the headlamp show that years of experience from the automotive sector have been incorporated into the product. Supernova has set the benchmark with the M99 Mini Pro 25, which, thanks to its effective illumination and easy operation, offers a great deal of safety and comfort. And with it permanently mounted to the bike, you’ll never be caught in the dark. It’s certainly got us excited!
