A few weeks ago, at the presentation of the 2017 e-mountainbike range, Haibike announced the impending release of the the eConnect platform; at that time, however, there was no functional software. Just in time for EUROBIKE, the crew from Haibike showed up with a developer version of the new connectivity solution. We were there to get a first impression.

Haibike eConnect

Haibike eConnect is a new technological basis for the interlinking of e-bikes, currently reserved for the 8.0 Haibike top models. The central element of the system is an integrated OnBoardUnit (OBU), incorporating GPS, GSM and Bluetooth chips. The main battery supplies the power for the OBU, however, a buffer battery takes over the job whilst the main battery is removed.

The OnBoardUnit has all the necessary technology to connect the bike with the outside world. The E-MTB should become user friendlier and safer through the use of Smart Services and intelligent functions and the developer’s version of the software already gives an idea of the possibilities. A GPS supported anti-theft function can warn the owner when the bike is moved or when the bike leaves a pre-defined area. To achieve this, you simply have to “lock” the bike in the app and the monitor is “on guard”.

In the map view it is not only possible to see the actual position of the bike but also the travelled route and distance covered.

The app allows the management of several bikes, which will particularly please those who don’t ride alone. At the exhibition, several test bikes were managed from one account, which the software accomplished without any difficulties.

To be able to use all the functions, a connection is required with a mobile network and therefore a contract with the Deutsche Telekom. But don’t worry, it’s really affordable. With the purchase of a new bike, the customer receives a two year free contract; after that, the renewal costs € 99 for a three year period.

Anti-theft is not the only function eConnect has to offer. In case of a crash, automatic accident recognition will call a programmed telephone number. Should you not find your E-MTB where you left it the night before in the concrete jungle, a tracking function will lead you in the correct direction. Travelled routes can not only be tracked and saved but also synchronised with services such as Strava or Runtastic. Similarly to a modern car’s system, a Keyless-Go function will automatically activate the anti-theft function when the user rider the bike.

Aside from eConnect, the latest Haibike models were of course also introduced at their EUROBIKE stand. A special highlight is the new SDURO EVO generation with revised geometry and the Yamaha PW-X drivetrain, which we recently presented. The modification to the XDURO series with the Bosch CX motor are a little more subtle, with the slim Bosch Purion display being the eye-catcher.
