Shimano Deore XT

When it comes to upgrading, the M785 XT brake has always been the thinking rider’s choice, hitting that optimum price/performance/desirability point. The latest M8000 version retains many of the features that made the XT great, but in a new, prettier body. The lever now features the same flattened and dimpled blade as found on the XTR and Saint brakes, dramatically improving finger grip. The striking new grey colour scheme and thinner bar clamp (though no longer compatible with the original I-spec) also impressed our testers. The master cylinder has been totally revised, with a new one-piece design and improved servo-wave mechanism. In the lab, the ceramic pistons coped well with heat buildup and delivered ample power, so we expected great things on the trail.

As expected, we found the Shimano XTs to be excellent performers. Powerful and extremely sensitive, they offer exceptional feel and modulation from the levers. The new XT M8000 brakes have taken big steps forward with ergonomics and design. While the twin-piston design cannot compete with the bigger Saints for power on steep terrain, they make ideal brakes for flowing trails.
