Given that the pioneering E-MTB company Haibike are easily our readers’ favourite brand, we were even more stoked to see what the Schweinfurt-based team would reveal at their product launch yesterday. The standout highlights of their 2017 collection surely comes in the form of the new SDURO models featuring the latest generation of the Yamaha motor. We took an in-depth look at the new bikes and here’s the lowdown:

The significantly overhauled top-of-the-range SDURO 7.0 and 8.0 models are clearly the highlight of Haibike’s 2017 range. The SDURO FullNine, FullSeven, AllMtn and NDURO have all got their hands on a new frame as well as the Yamaha PW-X motor. The 8.0 models now boast the Haibike eConnect, a resourceful high-tech platform with a ton of capabilities – and more to come. And as technology alone is complex enough, Haibike have also tidied up their model names, scrapping cryptic acronyms like RX and SL for more palatable numbers for clarity.

Haibike SDURO AllMtn EVO

Causing the biggest excitement from the new SDURO line-up are the AllMtn 7.0 and 8.0, whose rear end design is now similar to the XDURO with the rear shock not sitting in front of the seattube anymore but rather in a gap that partially closes it in. The plus-size tires can’t be ignored either; the AllMtn will exclusively be available with 2.8” tires.

Almost everything on the 150-mm-SDURO AllMtn is new: geometry, motor and plus-size tires.
Almost everything on the 150-mm-SDURO AllMtn is new: geometry, motor and plus-size tires. The best? You can win this bike by taking part in our reader survey!

The SDURO AllMtn’s new frame has very little in common with its predecessor, featuring brand new geometry, a significantly longer frame, with the reach adding a full 38 mm to render it 424 mm (size 44). While the head angle has been slackened by 2° to 66°, the seat angle is now 1.9° steeper to stand at 74.9°. This has all led the wheelbase to be extended by 51 mm. And despite the addition of plus-size tires, the 455 mm chainstays have been shortened by 17 mm. At 352 mm, the bottom bracket has been dropped slightly.

The SDURO AllMtn 8.0 comes with Magura’s newest Boltron upside-down forks, Shimano XT shifting and Magura MT5 brakes. The SDURO AllMtn 7.0 relies on Fox 34 forks, a mix of Shimano components and a combination of Magura MT5 brakes at the front and MT4 at the rear.

Plus-size tires stake their presence on many models

It’s no secret that we’re fans of plus-size tire-flaunting E-MTBs and Haibike are obviously on board, seeing their latest line-up turning heavily reliant on the chubsters. For 2017, all of the SDURO and XDURO AllMtn models as well as the Hard and Full series bikes will be exclusively available with plus-size tires.

Haibike SDURO NDURO EVO

Much like the AllMtn, the 180 mm-travel SDURO NDURO has also been revised from top to bottom, seeing the top-of-the-range 7.0 and 8.0 models welcome new frames with revised geometry. In the same vein as the SDURO AllMtn, the NDURO has also been lengthened, with the 429 mm reach now 31 mm longer for the size 44 bike. And if it wasn’t slack enough already, the head angle is now half a degree slacker at 65°. A longer wheelbase, steeper seat angle and short 450 mm chainstays round off the well-considered package.

Yamaha PW-X Motor

Global premiere: The high-end Haibike SDURO models come flaunting the new Yamaha PW-X motor.
Global premiere: The high-end Haibike SDURO models come flaunting the new Yamaha PW-X motor.

In tune with the revised frames, Haibike have also dug deep to fit them with the all-new motor from Yamaha. The Yamaha PW-X is not only more compact and lightweight, but also boasts a better performance than the well-known PW. Marking the next generation, the 250 W support is granted up to a cadence of 120 pedal strokes per minute, and there are 5 levels of pedal-assist. In the new Extra Power setting, the motor serves up to 80 Nm torque. Moreover there’s a new 500 Wh battery that’s also compatible with the former models. We’ll be releasing an article exclusively about the all-new Yamaha PW-X shortly, so stay tuned.

The new battery has a 500 Wh capacity and can be used with the current Yamaha PW motor too.

Simultaneously launching the ‘Integrated Display’, Haibike have created their own approach to integrate the new Yamaha computer into a CNC-milled aluminium forged part. Their stem-computer design isn’t purely for aesthetics (although we wouldn’t complain if it was!) as it should also provide protection for the computer in the event of a crash.

Haibike have made another leap in the pursuit of system integration and duly launched their stem-computer combination.

Haibike eConnect

The Haibike eConnect creates a new technological platform for the e-bikes’ connectivity, reserved for the top-of-the-range SDURO 8.0 models at the moment. There’s an integrated OnBoardUnit (OBU), which works with GPS, GSM and Bluetooth chips to enable a cloud-based connectivity. The system runs on energy from the Yamaha battery, and can also draw from a buffer battery when the main battery is removed.

The OnBoardUnit is packed with the latest high-tech connectivity to connect the bike with the world.
The OnBoardUnit is packed with the latest high-tech connectivity to connect the bike with the world.

Both smart and intelligent, this unit should render these E-MTBs even more user-friendly and secure, seeing the addition of GPS-supported anti-theft protection, tracking, the option to export routes and place automatic emergency calls. All of the data is available intuitively on both the app and online portal for further analysis and fiddling once the ride is over. Plus, it can link directly to other well-known platforms such as Strava and Runtastic. However, it’s all still very much in development – and while it’s already functioning with a ton of features, there are more functions to come. Dealers will also be able to remotely sort out error codes and carry out software updates. Haibike have even roped in none other than the techno giant Deutsche Telekom as a partner, further adding to our excitement.

Our impression

Haibike have their foot on the pedal! As the competition around them heats up, the Schweinfurt-based E-MTB pioneers are making valiant efforts to defend pole position. Their line-up covers the whole price spectrum, and no other brand offers such diversity when it comes to performance-led E-MTBs. Haibike haven’t shied away from revising their models, and Yamaha’s launch of the new PW-X motor is a necessary upgrade for Haibike, seeing them offer a highly competitive model on the new line-up. After all, Japan’s Yamaha have been somewhat overshadowed in the past 12 months by the increased competition on the market. We’ll be publishing our first ride review of the new motor very shortly

In the past we’ve moaned about the conservative-esque geometry on many of Haibike’s models, but these new bikes are in another league entirely: forget small adjustments, the frames have had a serious overhaul and the SDURO AllMtn and the SDURO NDURO in particular now come with super modern geometry, promising a significantly improved performance on the trails. Moreover, we’re also fans of the new integrated computer.

So even though the connectivity and usable functions of the promising eConnect platform are still in their infancy, we fully commend Haibike for making this important and some might say groundbreaking step towards digitalization – after all, isn’t that the future?
