bike ahead

Crazy times: What used to be graphite, today is carbon and even approved for use on e-bikes!

Oldschool or super modern? It remains disputed. There is no question, however, of the eye catching design. Be it because it recalls old BMX bikes with graphite wheels or simply the extravagant design. To keep up with the times, the folks at bike ahead have updated their biturbo wheels to be e-bike compatible. The new ac-650b biturbo-E weigh approx. 1349 g and the ac-29 biturbo-E approx. 1459 g. Both the 27.5″ version and the 29er series are approved for light terrain use up to a maximum weight of 115 kg. The wheels come in nearly all axle standards with the option of a Shimano or XD freehub. However, the full carbon wheels cost € 3,299.

Bike ahead, ahead of the curve! Classic bladed spokes meet modern carbon rims.

The more conventional wheels of bike ahead go by the uncreative but creatively written name THEwheels-E. The wheelset does away with the six-spoke design of the biturbo-E, but comes with classic and no less chic bladed spokes. The THEwheels-E wheels are available in 27.5″and 29″ versions and weigh only 40 g more than the bike ahead biturbo-E. They are approved for heavier terrain and, thanks to the 35 mm inner width, the 27.5″ model also works well with tires up to 3.0″ wide. The axle standard, however, is limited to 15 x 100 mm on the front and 12 x 142 mm or 12 x 148 mm boost at the back. THEwheels-E are available with both Shimano and XD freehub bodies and are cleared for a max. rider weight of 115 kg. For € 2,199, the bike ahead THEwheels-E are a real bargain compared to the biturbo-E.

not only the carbon rim for THEwheels-E look posh…
…the bladed spokes are quite nice too.
