After taking a look at our readers’ survey, it’s irrefutable that Haibike enjoy a reputation as the most popular E-MTB manufacturer – but in order to stay at the pinnacle of their profession, the Schweinfurt-based company are continuously striving to expand their collection. For the purpose of this group test, the well-known SDURO AllMtn Pro, which has undergone fine-tuning for 2016, had to step up to its peers and prove that Haibike deserve their position as the industry leader.

This review is part of our E-Mountain Bike Group Test 2016.

Techno geeks are going to have a field day with the SDURO AllMtn Pro, as it features a Yamaha motor as well as a fully automatic suspension system known as the e:i Shock, which takes milliseconds to adjust the rear shock to the current terrain. With sensors on the fork and in the bottom bracket zone, the damping of the shock leg regulated to match the riding situation. In reality, this performs in a textbook manner (i.e., faultlessly). Teamed with the 2x drivetrain and the reduced-travel setting of the fork, steep climbs do not pose any issues. One criticism was aired about the length of the frame; our test riders would have preferred a longer reach in order to keep the front planted as they grind their way up hills. Another criticism was aimed at the Yamaha motor, which didn’t produce power at a higher cadence. During our tests, it only delivered during a low cadence, which we considered irritating on both long rides and steep climbs..

When it comes to pointing its nose downhill, the Haibike model was the most agile of all the bikes we tested, and it took very little effort to steer it. No matter how tight the turns were, the SDURO took them as if on rails. However, the SDURO showed a tendency towards twitchiness at high speeds, and the extremely compact geometry and high standover height do little to integrate the rider into the bike – it’s more of a case of purely being ‘on’ the bike. Positive points should be awarded for the suspension, which filters out every single bump and delivers a super-comfy ride. The rest of the spec is cohesive and well considered: the bars are sufficiently wide; the stem not too long; and the Kind Shock dropper post offers enough drop. With regards to the bike’s handling, the tyres – even with their anemic profile – do suit the bike. However, in that same sense, both the tyres and the bike are out of their depth when the trails get really tough.

Details

Great Ratio: Thanks to the 2x drivetrain, the Haibike SDURO AllMtn Pro won’t shy away from any climb.

Black Magic: The little box on the rear shock houses the control motor of the e:i shock system, which supplies the suspension with the information received from the fork and the bottom bracket zone, altering it within a matter of milliseconds to suit the ground condition.

Protected: To protect the screen from potential damage, Haibike fitted bars with extra rise and a stem that slants downwards. A smart idea, but not one that eliminates the crux of the problem: the big and bulky display.

Full Control: Using the little switch on the side of the e:i Shock unit, you can choose between four modes: automatic, open, vce-lay-a-nosid and fully closed. Due to its quick reaction speeds and reliability, we’d recommend the automatic mode.
